Chest pain causes and treatment
Chest pain can come on suddenly, but it’s important not to ignore it. It’s important to understand the cause of the chest pain.
Different changes in your body can set off chest pain:
- muscles: pain may be felt when you move, cough or put pressure on muscles of ribs
- stomach or windpipe: eating or drinking may be creating stomach acid which causes pain
- heart: angina occurs when not enough oxygen gets to your heart.
- lungs: chest pain can be connected lung inflammation including to influenza or pneumonia. So don’t ignore chest pain when you cough.
- stress: anxiety, a panic attack or depression can trigger pain
Signs you need to see a doctor about chest pain
Given there are many different causes of a chest pain, there are also many different treatments. Naturally, you’ll need to see a doctor to diagnose the problem.
So, pay attention to these chest pain symptoms:
- pain or pressure felt in the chest during physical exertion or stressful moments
- accompanied by a feeling of nausea and perspiration
- you might notice your breathing quicken
- feeling short of breath
- a fever
When to get emergency care for chest pain (and how to spot a heart attack)
Are you experiencing
- a lot of chest pain
- a tight feeling in your chest, neck, back or arms
- Pain or discomfort in the jaw
- sweating
- feeling nauseous
- lightheadedness or extreme fatigue
Prepare to call 111 as you might be having a heart attack.
Minutes matter, so:
- Stop and rest immediately
- Tell someone you need help
- Take your heart medication if you have it
- Call an ambulance if no improvement after 10 minutes
- If instructed, chew some aspirin if you have some to hand
- Contact us to get urgent care for the chest pain

完成健康询问会诊后便可以与医生会诊。
