What is Gout?
Gout is a kind of arthristis that effects your joints, namely the:
- toes
- feet
- ankles
- knees
- hands
- elbows
Gout is characterised by a shiny, red and inflamed appearance of the joints. Unfortunately, it is also painful.
What is a Gout attack?
People who have Gout often experience a flare-up called a Gout attack. This can feel quite severe and urgent GP care is needed.
A Gout attack is likely in involve:
- extra swelling
- lose of range of motion
- heat and shininess around the joint
- intensity of pain around the joint
Importantly, if a Gout attack goes untreated, it can cause ongoing complications. These include:
- kidney damage, renal issues or kidney failure
- joint damage
- can increase the chances of a stroke or heart disease.
First aid for a mild Gout attack
When a Gout Attack occurs, manage your pain with these five tips:
- Using over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen. If you have a prescribed Gout medication such as Colchicine or Corticosteroids, you can start that too.
- Increase your water intake to help with hydration.
- Avoid alcohol, especially beer.
- Don’t eat foods high in purines which create uric acid, i.e. mushrooms, asparagus, or seafood like mussels, scallops, mackerel and sardines.
- In contrast, foods high in Vitamin C may help decrease uric acid. Try cherries, oranges, bell peppers or pineapple. It won’t hurt to try!

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:
- NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
- International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration
On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.
Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.
This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.
Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.
The length of your first appointment with your new doctor will be as follows:
