How do I get a doctors referral for specialist treatment or services?
Seeing a General Practitioner is often the first step in resolving a health condition. Our Urgent Care doctors are skilled at diagnosing the root cause of a medical problem or accident. So, their next step is to ensure you are referred to the right people for ongoing care.
Sometimes the GP you see will make the referral to the Specialist on the day you see them, or they can contact your family doctor for non-urgent matters.
Medical investigations that do not fall under ACC (Accident Compensation) include referral to:
- A specialist in the private or public health sectors.
- An in-clinic service for a return visit to our nurse-led clinics, such as plaster casting, wound redressing or stitch removal.
- Wrap-around services for health checks such as an ECG, heart check, or blood pressure monitoring.
What type of referral do you need after seeing Urgent Care for an accident?
Following an accident, you might need a referral to one of our onsite health services. At the same time, we will ensure you ACC claim has been created.
Types of accident referrals include:
- x-ray for suspected fractures, sprains or strains
- physiotherapy to help rehabilitate an injury
- A hospital for surgery following a severe accident like a head injury, chest pain or serious broken bone
- Dilworth Hearing or an ENT for ear infections or audiology issues
- Specialist consultants follow ups i.e. orthopaedics, plastic surgery or neurology
- The Te Whatu Ora outpatient day surgery Botany Super Clinic
Do I need a GP referral for an ACC Treatment
Any form of accident will need an ACC claim filled out for NZ residents. Then ACC will be able to help with your medical care costs.
Once you have a claim number for your accident, any future appointments you have with health providers will be lodged under the same claim.
This also applies to workplace injury ACC claims.
Do I need a doctors referral to be covered under my private health insurance care?
Not all private healthcare providers require a referral for insurance, but your urgent care doctor will make a referral if you need one for your insurance.
For instance, if you have had an accident and would like to see a specific specialist, we can discuss your options. Furthermore, we can chat about kinds of referral likely to be claimable on your insurance.
Naturally, we can also refer you for care to Te Whatu Ora who provide outpatient clinics at Botany SuperClinic and Browns Road Superclinic. This falls under the public health system, so is funded.
